Second Golden Bull freshman to receive the award this season

Hampton, VA - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) announced Johnson C. Smith University freshman quarterback Marvin Payne, Jr. as the Rookie of the Week of the week ending October 24th.

Payne (5'11, 180 lbs, West Palm Beach, FL) saw his most playing time of the season this past weekend against Chowan University. He checked into the game during the second quarter and from there delivered 13-of-24 pass attempts for 186 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception.

Unfortunately, the Golden Bulls were topped by Chowan 33-22 in Murfreesboro, NC (Garrison Stadium). When asked about his performance following the game, Payne had these remarks, "When I first got in the game I was nervous, but I calmed down after the first few downs. Credit goes to Jeremy (Franklin) who converted my passes into touchdown. Going into halftime I felt confident in my receivers, but my goal was to win the game."

Payne could see a few more snaps at quarterback in the season finale against Shaw University on October 31, 2009. JCSU is currently 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the CIAA. A win versus Shaw would be a great way to cap off the season and show improvement moving forward. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm inside Millbrook High Stadium in Raleigh, NC.
