Petersburg, VA – The Johnson C. Smith University men’s tennis team finished 7-1 at the CIAA East-West Roundup held March 19-20th at the Virginia State University tennis courts. The Golden Bulls improve to 12-11 overall and 7-2 in the CIAA. The roundup matched western division teams against eastern division teams for the first time this season.

Select institutions from the Eastern side feature a men’s tennis program, therefore JCSU played doubleheaders. On day one (Friday), the Golden Bulls blanked both Virginia Union and Lincoln (PA) 9-0. Both matches against Lincoln are non-conference victories.

Day two presented more of a challenge for J.C. Smith as they faced St. Paul’s and the hosting Virginia State Trojans. Johnson C. Smith shut out St. Paul’s 9-0 in both matches. In the first match against the Tigers, sophomores McKenzie Bean (Hamilton, Bermuda) and Robert Butts (Atlanta, GA) topped William Isler and Marrion Buchanan 8-1 in No. 2 doubles. Senior Aaron Hutcherson (Cincinnati, OH) defeated Isler 8-1 in the fourth singles spot of the second match. The Golden Bulls won every other match position 8-0 in the doubleheader.

In match one of the doubleheader versus Virginia State, JCSU fell behind 2-1 after doubles play. Seniors Jason Stuckey (Cincinnati, OH) and Hutcherson dropped the No. 1 doubles match 8-6 to John Lanier and Daron Jack. Bean and Butts won the number two doubles spot 8-3, but junior Jamil Jones (Atlanta, GA) and sophomore Jerald Stuckey (Cincinnati, OH) let the third doubles match slip 8-1.

Jason Stuckey was narrowly edged out by Lanier 9-8 in number one singles. Butts lost to Jack 8-6 in the second singles position for a 4-1 VSU advantage. Bean, Hutcherson, and Jones won in No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 singles, respectively to even the team scores. Unfortunately, Harrison Gaskins got the better of Jerald Stuckey in No. 6 singles 8-1 for a 5-4 Trojan victory.

The Golden Bulls faced a 2-1 deficit again after doubles play in the second matchup. Only Bean and Butts pulled out a victory (8-3) in doubles competition at the No. 2 position. Jason Stuckey avenged his earlier singles loss with an 8-2 win over Lanier.

Jack and Gaskins earned wins for VSU at the No. 2 and No. 6 singles spots. Bean, Hutcherson, and Jones were able to maintain dominance in their respective singles matches for a 5-4 JCSU victory.

Johnson C. Smith hopes to keep their winning stride on Wednesday, March 23rd against St. Augustine’s College. Match play in this divisional contest is scheduled for 1:00 pm at the Coleman-Cuthbertson Tennis Courts.
