SAMANTHA SMITH NAMED TO THE ALL-CIAA SOFTBALL TEAM

Only Lady Golden Bull selected this season

Hampton, VA – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) recognized Samantha Smith as a member of the 2010 All-CIAA Softball First team on Tuesday afternoon. Smith will be honored during the CIAA Spring Sports Championship Banquet held Wednesday, April 14th on the campus of Virginia State University. 

Smith, a junior from Whiteville, NC, played behind the plate at catcher for the majority of the 2010 season. She has played in all 34 games with 33 hits, 19 RBIs, and 35 runs scored. Smith has recorded one homerun, four doubles, and four triples with 29 stolen bases. She has a batting average of .402 and 82 at-bats. This is a first time all conference selection for Smith. 

The Lady Golden Bulls finished this season 15-21 overall, 8-7 in the CIAA, and tied for second in the Western Division at 6-4. 

Johnson C. Smith will now head to the 2010 CIAA Softball Championships in Petersburg, VA on April 15th. The double elimination tournament will begin on Thursday, April 15th with a championship being crowned on Saturday, April 17th. The complete scheduled is to be determined. The CIAA Championships will be played at the Petersburg Sports Complex with the semifinals and championship game on the VSU campus.
