Petersburg, VA – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association named the 2010 All-CIAA Women’s Tennis Team on Wednesday evening during the Spring Sports Championship Awards Ceremony held inside Harris Hall on the campus of Virginia State University. Freshman
Samantha Barnes (Hampton, VA) has been named CIAA Rookie of the Year, while teammates
Jae Hargett (Minneapolis, MN) and
Tyra Breaux (Baltimore, MD) earned all-conference honors.
Barnes played in the No. 1 singles and doubles slot with partner Hargett. She finished the season 13-12 overall and 11-4 in the CIAA for singles competition. Barnes ended the regular season winning five of her last six singles matches and 13 of the last 15 in doubles play.
Jae Hargett named All-CIAA at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles
Hargett, a senior Communication Arts major, concluded the season with a solid 14-11 singles record and 12-3 CIAA mark playing No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. She and doubles partner Samantha Barnes had a 14-11 record in competition. This is the second all-conference honor for Hargett.
Breaux, a junior Communication Arts major, is the final All-CIAA selection for the Golden Bulls this season. She competed in No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles with partner Camille Allen (Teaneck, NJ) all season. Breaux posted a 15-7 overall record and a perfect 13-0 CIAA mark in singles. Breaux and Allen were 14-8 in doubles play.

Johnson C. Smith has advanced to the semifinals of the 2010 Women’s Tennis Championships being played at the VSU Tennis Complex. JCSU squares off against the Virginia State women’s team at 11:00 am on Friday, April 16th. The winner moves forward to the championship match with a champion being crowned on Saturday, April 17th, barring inclement weather.
