JCSU MEN TAKE 3RD, WOMEN EARN 5TH IN THE GUILFORD CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL

JCSU men's cross country placed third at the Guilford College XC Carnival

Greensboro, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men’s cross country team finished third with a team score of 117 and time of 1:40:19 (average time 20:03), while the women’s team finished fifth with a team score of 137 and time of 2:12:44 (average time 26:32) at the Guilford College Cross Country Carnival men’s and women’s race on Saturday afternoon. Guilford's Derick Kosgei won the men’s race, and helped the host Quakers edge UNCG for the men’s team championship. UNCG's Michelle Chewens captured the Guilford College Cross Country Carnival women’s race and helped the Spartans win the team title Saturday. 

Sophomore Akino Ming (Portland, Jamaica) completed the six-kilometer course in 18:56 as the top JCSU runner for 18th overall in the 56-runner field. Sophomore Kent King (Pittsburg, PA) followed in 22nd place at 19:25 and helped the Golden Bulls to a third-place finish.

Kosgei (15:51) held off UNCG's Kenny Hinman by five seconds to capture the men’s race. Both Guilford and UNCG placed five runners among the top-10 finishers with Kosgei's first-place finish the difference in the Quakers one-point team victory. 

Freshman Naffene Briscoe finished the five-kilometer course in 24:41 for 18th place, followed by senior Shermaine Williams (St. Andrew, Jamaica) for 23rd place in 25:58. Senior Rosemarie Carty (St. Andrew, Jamaica) was the third top runner for JCSU with a time of 26:24 for 28th place.

Xahnn Georgia-Reid finished in 36th with a time of 28:17

Chewens completed the course in 19:59, just seven seconds in front of teammate Jade Farlo in the 47-runner field. Coker's Kendyl Seawright followed in third place at 20:26 and helped the Cobras to a second-place finish. Guilford Taylor Stokes (20:29) and UNCG's Jenna Paley (20:39) rounded out the top five. Mountain State, which placed three runners in the top 15, finished third in the eight-team field.

Johnson C. Smith will travel to Salisbury, NC for the Livingstone Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, September 11th.
