Chapel Hill, NC - The Johnson C. Smith University men's track and field team sparked their 2012 indoor season over the weekend at the annual Dick Taylor Invitational held at the Eddie Smith Field House on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill.

Junior team captain Andre Collins (Kingston, Jamaica) led the Golden Bull charge at the invitational. Collins clocked in at 8.02 in the 60m hurdles for third place and a NCAA provisional qualifying time. His performance placed third on the NCAA provisional list. 

Senior Rolston Gabriel (8.29) and junior Anthony Cureton (8.32) completed the 60m hurdles for fifth and sixth, respectively.  Cureton (7.16) along with sophomores Jordan Broome (7.55) and Randale Watson 7.72 competed well in the 60m dash.   

Collins (24.75) was JCSU's lone competitor in the 200m. Sophomore Rolando Berch (St. Andrew, Jamaica) opened his 2012 season with a personal best (PB) of 49.97 for fourth in the 400m. Berch was accompanied in the event by junior Winston Brown (50.86), who took fifth. 

Junior Akino Ming (1:21.20 - PB), Berch (1:24.35 - PB), and freshman Rajiv Service (1:28.5) crossed the finish line for second, seventh, and 22nd, respectively in the 600m event. Three Golden Bulls competed in the 800m: junior Jamille Callum (2:02.59), freshman Geovanie Foote (2:07.50), and senior Kent King (2:11.92).

King returned in the mile running a 4:59.72 to finish ahead of Foote (5:01.89) and freshman Nyquan George (5:15.49) in their debut performances. George returned for a quick double in the 3000m event.  The 4x400m team of Berch, Ming, Callum and Brown teamed together for the first time since winning the NCAA outdoor championships in 2011 and placed fourth with a time of 3:21.55.

In the field events, sophomore Horane Holgate (St. Thomas, Jamaica) picked up where he left off last season. Holgate leaped 6.54m for ninth in the long jump event matching his freshman outdoor PB.  He was accompanied in the event by Broome (5.71m), who finished 17th. 

Holgate recorded 14.51m for second in the triple jump; he was just seven centimeters below his 2011 outdoor PB. Broome returned three fouls in this event.  Watson, 2011 CIAA triple champion, placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 14.51m.

The Golden Bulls will next travel to College Park, MD for their second meet at the Terrapin Invitational. January 20, 2012.
