Landover, MD - The Johnson C. Smith University women's track and field team recorded 37 points to place sixth at the 2012 Terrapins Invitational hosted by the University of Maryland inside the Prince George's Sports Complex. This was the second indoor meet of the season for JCSU.

Junior Antoinette Taylor (Oakland, CA) achieved a personal best in the field events. Taylor heaved the shot put 11.17m to record an improved performance and showcase some growth in strength. The performance placed her 12th, senior teammate Marcia Higgins (Browns Mills, NJ) threw 10.89m for 14th, and junior Xahnn-Georgia Reid (Clarendon, Jamaica) was 29th with a throw of 7.34.

2011 indoor multiple All-American, sophomore Danielle Williams (St. Andrew, Jamaica) debuted in the 60m final with a time of 7.66 for third place. Senior Monique Kelly (St. Andrew, Jamaica) clocked 7.72 and won the consolation final in the 60m. Her time placed fourth overall in the meet.  Fellow senior Rosemarie Carty (St. Andrew, Jamaica) completed the JCSU entries in the event with a time 8.06 seconds.

Williams returned to team up with freshman sensation Samantha Elliott (Kingston, Jamaica) to take the top two spots in the 60m hurdles.  Williams won in 8.53 seconds leading home Elliot 8.59 (PB).  Carty (8.88) won her preliminary heat, but was unable to compete in the final.   In the 200m, sophomore Naffene Briscoe (St. Catherine, Jamaica) stopped the clock at 25.87 seconds for third place in the event.

Briscoe returned with a time of 59.30 in the 400m for seventh. Senior Sasha-Gay Cunningham (Clarendon, Jamaica) placed 30th overall in the event with a time of 62.24. Freshman Monique Lovelock (St. Catherine, Jamaica) accidentally bumped into a fellow competitor and had a fall in her 400m heat.   Lovelock later participated in the 600m competing to 1:50.82 for 23rd in the event. She ran alongside Cunningham 1:56.00 for 31st.

Elliott completed a weekend of personal best while competing in the 800m. She ran a time of 2:37.62 to beat her time last week.  This was the second time Elliott has ever run the event; the freshman continues to show poise and focus.

Sophomore Evan Gholson (Sacramento, CA) failed to make the opening height in the high jump. However, Gholson returned to achieve a season best 9.51m in the triple jump.  Kelly's leap of 5.30 improved on her season opening performance in the long jump and placed 11th.

The 4x400m team of Lovelock, Carty, Briscoe and Elliott were unable to complete the event due to an injury to Lovelock on the first leg.

JCSU continues their preparation for their next meet at the Penn State National in State College, PA on Friday January 27, 2012.
