University Park, PA - The Johnson C. Smith University men's indoor track and field team fine tuned during the Penn State National Invitational hosted by Pennsylvania State University at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track. This was the team's third meet of the season.

Sophomore Akino Ming (Portland, Jamaica) and junior Andre Collins (Kingston, Jamaica) joined the list of automatic qualifiers for the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships with solid performances. Ming won his 400m heat in 47.14 (PB) to finish second best among collegiate entries.  His time is also ranks second in the Division II in the event and qualifies him automatically for the 2012 Championships.

Ming was accompanied in the 400m by junior Winston Brown (St. Andrew, Jamaica), who clocked in at 49.00 (SB).  Ming ran in the 200m to place third in 21.83 for a second PB and a provisional qualifying time. Freshman Rajiv Service (Trelanny, Jamaica) improved his indoor PB to 23.45 in the same event.

Collins' heat time of 7.93 in the 60m hurdles earned him an automatic qualifying mark. He is currently the third ranked sprint hurdler in Division II. Collins returned to run 7.97 in the semi-finals for fourth place; unfortunately he missed the finals by two spots.

Senior Rolston Gabriel (Charlotte, NC) timed in at 8.16 (PB) in the hurdles event.  Gabriel's time earns him a provisional qualifying standard and places him 17th in the nation.  Sophomore Gabriel Franklin (Casselberry, FL) made his season debut by racing to 7.02 in the 60m.  The event was his first attempt at the distance since recovering from an injury sustained during the football season.

Junior Jamille Callum (Orleans, MA) raced to 2:01.73 in the 800m. Callum returned to team with freshman Geovanie Foote (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica), senior Kent King (Pittsburgh, PA), and freshman Nyquan George (Charlotte, NC) in the 4x800m relay.  They stopped the clock at 8:19.60.

The team of Brown, sophomore Rolando Berch (St. Andrew, Jamaica), Franklin and Ming produced their best performance of the season 3:14.37 to finish fourth in the 4x400m relay.

Sophomore Orange Lipscomb (Durham, NC) opened his season in the long jump, but fouled out. Sophomore teammate Horane Holgate (St. Thomas, Jamaica) nailed his first attempt in the triple jump; leaping to a career best 14.77m. With this performance, Holgate moved up to sixth in Division II and earned himself a NCAA provisional qualifying standard.

Sophomore Randale Watson (Kingston, Jamaica) produced 14.86m in the shot put. The performance followed his school record heave of 16.07m achieved last week in Maryland.

“The team stepped up to the plate this weekend,” commented head coach Lennox Graham.  “It has been a lot of work, since the team had one month off for the Christmas break. However, we are beginning to respond.”

The team next competes at the CIAA Indoor Championships in Hampton, VA on February 11-12, 2012.
