University Park, PA - The Johnson C. Smith University women's indoor track and field team made numerous improvements during the Penn State National Invitational hosted by Pennsylvania State University at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track. This was the team's third meet of the season.

Sophomore Danielle Williams (St. Andrew, Jamaica) led the group of NCAA provisional and automatic qualifiers.  On Friday evening,  Williams produced a personal best  (PB) 8.29 in the 60m hurdles semi-finals before returning to share  fourth place in the final with senior teammate Rosemarie Carty (St. Andrew, Jamaica with a time of 8.36. The time was season best for Carty.  Both times were NCAA automatic qualifying marks.

Freshman Samantha Elliott (Kingston, Jamaica) raced to 8.60 and made it through to the semi-final round in the event.  Williams also sped to 7.56 (SB) in the 60m dash and qualified for the final. She was pulled out due to the physical demand of a sixth round of sprints in the same session. Senior Monique Kelly's (St. Andrew, Jamaica) 7.71 missed the semi-final by one place, finishing with the 17th best performance in the 60m dash.

Kelly's time of 25.19 (PB) grabbed 18th place in the 200m. Junior Naffene Briscoe (St. Catherine, Jamaica) timed in at 25.31 (PB) to place 21st in the event. Briscoe led the JCSU charge in the 400m, recording 56.64 (PB) for 11th. Freshman Monique Lovelock (St. Catherine, Jamaica) clocked 57.98 for a personal best.

Senior Sasha-Gay Cunningham (Clarendon, Jamaica) was the lone Golden Bull in the 500m with a time of 1:21.93 (PB).

The 4x400m relay team of Briscoe, Kelly, Lovelock and Elliott completed assignments on the track, racing to 3:49.32 (SB).

In the field, junior Evan Gholson (Sacramento, CA) failed at the opening height of 1.60m in the high jump. Senior Marcia Higgins (Browns Mills, NJ) threw 11.51m (PB); while junior teammate Xahnn-Georgia Reid (Clarendon, Jamaica) recorded 8.80m (PB) in the shot put.

“We could describe this as our best team performance so far this season,” stated head coach Lennox Graham. “There are areas that do require improvements; however, the student-athletes are beginning to respond to the demands being placed on them by their coaches and competitors.”

JCSU next competes at the CIAA Indoor Championships in Hampton, VA on February 11-12, 2012.
