JCSU riding a four-match win streak

Lincoln University, PA – The Johnson C. Smith University men's tennis team defeated Virginia Union (9-0, 6-1) and Lincoln University of Pennsylvania (9-0, 8-1) twice to finish 4-0 at the CIAA cross divisional roundup hosted by Lincoln at their tennis complex on March 15-17th. JCSU improves to 4-12 overall and 4-3 in the conference.

On day one, the Golden Bulls swept singles and doubles competition against both Lincoln and Virginia Union for 9-0 victories. The combination of junior Dion Chever (Newport News, VA) and sophomore Darrell Sawyer (Cincinnati, OH) dominated at the number one doubles spot. Freshman duo Kia Brewington (Siler City, NC) and Yusuf Barnes (Leander, TX) played number two doubles.

Sophomore Tobias Whitley (Largo, MD) and freshman Sharif Axam (Atlanta, GA) were the number three doubles pair. Whitley and Axam beat Michael Adjei and Elias Besong of Lincoln, but won by forfeit in the doubles matches versus Virginia Union.

Sawyer finished 3-1 at the number one singles position. He defeated Jarvis Rideau (6-0, 6-2; 8-4) of Virginia Union twice and split matches with Austin Kische of Lincoln. Barnes and Chever were a perfect 4-0 at the number two and three singles spots, respectively. Kia Brewington also had a 3-1 record over the weekend. He topped Michael Adjei (6-0, 6-0) and Elias Besong (8-0) at the fourth singles position; but split with Charles Sheets of Virginia Union.

Sophomore Tuan Nguyen (Greensboro, NC) earned a 4-0 record at the number five singles spots. Axam played in the sixth singles position and collected four wins, including three by forfeit.

JCSU men's tennis plays their next match on Wednesday, March 27th against Shaw University. First serve in this divisional clash is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Biltmore Hills Park in Raleigh, NC.
