July 12, 2008
Parts of the story were taken from the Jamaica Observer (Paul Reid) BYDGOSZCZ, Poland - July 12, 2008 - Johnson C. Smith University track star Shermaine Williams earned a silver medal at the 12th World Junior Championships at the Zawisza Stadium in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Williams, who leads the world in terms of time and who won a silver medal at the World Youth Championships last year in Ostrava, Czech Republic, got the ball rolling when she recovered from a mid-race hiccup to fight her way back from fourth to second place. She clocked 13.48 seconds to finish behind the American Teona Rodgers, who won in 13.40 seconds, just edging out Cuba's Belkis Milanes, 13.49. Williams, who ran with a plaster on her left big toe as a result of a mishap earlier in the week, was happy for her medal. "I feel very good right now; this is not the time I wanted, but I won a medal and I am thankful." She said she "got out (of the blocks) well" but "landed bad at the fourth hurdle", which threw her off her rhythm as she was forced to use her arms more.Even so, she was still out of the medal picture after the last hurdle and had to put on the rush to get to second place. Williams is the current NCAA Division II 60-meter hurdles champion and owns the NCAA Division II 60-meter hurdles record. The results of her race are as follows:
